Theme Teams

NICE operates through "Theme Teams" in five areas of care our members decided were the top priorities.  Our Teams are made up of researchers, practitioners and students from diverse disciplines and professions.  The Team members work together to translate evidence-based research into interdisciplinary tools which are easy-to-use.  These tools are aimed at both health care practitioners as well as seniors themselves, and their families.

If you are interested in working with one of our Theme Teams or would like copies of their tools, please contact Anthony Lombardo, the Network Manager of NICE.  More information about the tools our teams have developed is available HERE.

Caregiving

Chair: Dr. Elsa Marziali, University of Toronto

The Caregiving Theme Team works to develop tools aimed at health care practitioners who provide care to seniors, as well as other "informal" carers, such as the family and friends of older adults.  This Team has developed two tools so far: the "Caring Calendar" and the "Respect All" poster.

Dementia Care

Co-Chair: Dr. Tricia Woo, McMaster University
Co-Chair: Dr. Kathleen Cruttenden, University of New Brunswick

The Dementia Care Theme Team is working on a screening tool for dementia.

Elder Abuse

Co-Chair: Dr. Ariela Lowenstein, University of Haifa (Israel)
Co-Chair: Dr. Barry Goldlist, University of Toronto

The Elder Abuse Theme Team was launched in November 2007.  It is the newest of the Theme Teams, and is working on numerous tools around the detection and prevention of elder abuse on an international scale.

End-of-Life Issues

Co-Chair: Maryse Savoie, Veterans Affairs Canada
Co-Chair: Christopher Klinger, Doctoral Candidate, University of Toronto

The End-of-Life Issues Theme Team is working on tools to help support health care practitioners and family and friends in the care of a dying person.  They have developed the "Capacity and Consent (Ontario)" tool, as well as the "What to Expect when Someone Close to You is Dying" informational brochure.

Mental Health

Co-Chair: Dr. Diane Buchanan, Queen's University
Co-Chair: Simone Powell, Public Health Agency of Canada

The Mental Health Theme Team is developing a tool around the diagnosis and treatment of depression among seniors, based on the guidelines of the Canadian Coalition for Seniors Mental Health.  They are also developing a tool aimed at seniors with depression, to help those seniors better understand their depression and its treatment.

Ethnicity and Aging

Co-Chair: Karen Kobayashi, University of Victoria
Co-Chair: Daniel W.L. Lai, University of Calgary
