Please circulate the attached information sheet and registration form to your local baccaureate nursing programs and nursing PhD students and encourage them to apply. We encourage early application because registration is limited to 25 participants.
The Knowledge Exchange Institute for Geriatric Nursing Education is a response to evidence that while care of older adults is the core business of health care and most nursing care is provided to older adults, in Canadian undergraduate nursing programs there is limited capacity for gerontology nursing education. It is imperative that faculty, gerontology experts and non-experts alike, prepare nurses for care of older persons.
The Institute will equip Canadian nursing faculty and PhD students to incorporate evidence based gerontology knowledge into education of undergraduate nursing students. It will empower nursing faculty to improve nursing education by providing them with:
·
Current research based knowledge about nursing care of older patients;
·
Tools to incorporate this knowledge in their teaching;
·
Tools to identify opportunities to enhance curriculum; and
·
Support, tools, and strategies to champion evidence based gerontology content in nursing curriculum.
Faculty members and PhD students from your program will come away with Canadian and U.S. evidence-based resources to enhance geriatric content including:
·
Knowledge transfer tools developed by the National Initiative for Care of the Elderly (NICE);
·
State-of-science reviews and teaching resources for key topics related to care of older adults with complex illnesses, prepared specifically for nursing educators by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing
